From Cynthia Zirkwitz Blaze Coaching and Diffusing Life
I just listened to a most exciting interview between Terri Levine of the Coach Institute and three-time Olympian, Reuben Gonzalez. Reuben was nicknamed "Bulldog" in his youth because he never gave up. His father wisely encouraged him with the following:
- Hang out with people who have already 'made it' (are successful) and not with people whom you have influence over– they'll just drag you down to their level
- Read autobiographies of people who have achieved success
- Reuben said that he devoured this sort of book and found that the pattern for successful people was:
- Had a dream
- Struggled
- Persevered
- Gained a Victory
A lot of what Reuben said was not strictly "new stuff"– I've heard it before– but, as he said, "Repetition is the Mother of Knowledge" and it doesn't hurt to hear this information again.
REUBEN ON GOAL-SETTING
- Studies show that if you hone in on a single goal (live it, breathe it, etc., ) you pretty much assured yourself of reaching it… however, if you are attempting to work on two goals at the same time, your chances of achieving even one of them drop off to about 56% and if you have three areas you are striving in, your chances of achieving in a single goal of the three drops to about 20%.
- Reuben doesn't have cable TV or get a newspaper… he wants to be as undistracted as possible by 'the negative'– i.e., bad news
- Reuben sees his dreams or passions as work hanging in there to achieve. He states that when other people demean your dreams it just means that they don't believe in your dream as much as you do!
- When you reach the point where you believe in your dream– when you believe that it is possible for you to achieve it– your mind starts making it happen for you! BELIEVE IT IS POSSIBLE!
- Successful people are ordinary people who decided not to quit their dreams
- Reuben believes that God gives us dreams as a sort of carrot to become all that we are meant to be and that if we quit on our dreams we are actually acting out of selfishness
Reuben writes his dreams on a 3" x 5" card and dates the dream (gives himself a deadline). Then 24/7 he focuses on that particular dream as if he has already achieved it. (see the following "End Result" imagery). His office walls are covered with visual reminders of his dream.
Every morning before he turns on his computer, he:
- writes out his goals in the present tense
- reads them out loud in front of a mirror in a passionate voice (which he says sounds a lot like 'an angry voice'– very intense and purpose-full)
The following is something called "End Result Imagery" and is a technique used by athletes, sales people, and anyone interested in speeding up the achievement of their goals. It is a kind of recipe that you could use to get a faster delivery on your dreams. Be sure to combine all your senses to enhance the visualization… if you feel blocked in experiencing any of the senses, just do some EFT , with a set-up phrase such as "Even though I am not sure what success tastes like, I deeply and completely accept myself". Follow up on any tail-enders.
- See yourself having attained the goal
- Hear two supportive friends congratulating you on achieving what you dreamed of achieving
- Feel the emotions of success
- Smell whatever fragrances that might be connected with success. (If you have a favorite essential oil, such as Abundance or Joy , you might want to inhale or diffuse it as you do the visualization.)
- Taste what success is like for you
- Combine all these images together and see yourself clearly reaching your goal!
- Copy and post this in visible places, practicing daily until YOU BELIEVE!
